95% of people who feel ill and decide to consult their doctor can still only be assessed by clinical judgement. Blood tests, X-rays or other scientific investigations performed to clarify the diagnosis, are invariably negative. The big unknown in modern medicine is not cancer or heart disease but the cause of all those niggling nerves, coughs and collywobbles. My psychoanalysis of the situation took me to Canada including the Arctic where I worked on the military front line of the cold war and London in the so-called ‘swinging sixties’ where I was able to study the effects of cannabis, cocaine and heroin. Having resigned in disgust from the NHS in 1973 for its oppressive and exploitative terms and conditions for family doctors, I emigrated to practice in Muslim culture on an oil field but was again dogged by remuneration problems. The book concludes with fresh ideas about those popular topics of conversation, religion, politics and ‘sex’.

One of the most impressive and valuable books of recent history. This book contains something for everyone - politics, religion, sociology and, of course, medicine. Although it sounds daunting and perhaps boring to some, it is neither. It is written in a friendly manner which permits all the information to be absorbed, and even the most vapid person will find something of interest. The book is really a collection of lessons to help us in life, not just as individuals but on a larger scale. With this book, societies and countries can be vastly improved and the world a better place. If you only ever read one book, make it this one.

A fantastic book. What makes it unique relative to information is carries is the fact that the author puts his observations into a detailed historical and social context, something overlooked far too often by people pushing the same cause.
