Oct 28, 2015Book Review - “Gale Force” by Ian Palmer MOVE over Matthew Reilly, there’s now a new Australian action-adventure writer on the block! Yes, Ian “Brose” Palmer’s recently released first novel, “Gale Force”, though a fledgling work, is a cracker of a yarn. Brose (as he is colloquially known to his ex-service chums) got his taste for writing and self-publishing with his original effort, “Report of Proceedings”, a memoir of a 20-year career covering a diverse and illustrious period of service in the Royal Australian Navy. Now, trying his hand at a work of fiction, he’s pulled off a winner with “Gale Force”. The story’s fast pace and twisting plot, as military field operative, Max Gale, goes undercover with the RAN, will swiftly seduce the reader into searching for more, the deeper he or she gets caught up in the intrigue of the story line. As it was with a string of rousing adventure writers of the past, like Alistair MacLean RN, Nicholas Monsarrat RNVR, J.E. MacDonnell RAN, Ian Fleming... More > NID and Hammond Innes, Royal Artillery (but prolific story-teller of the sea), Brose has drawn on his knowledge and experiences acquired in the navy, together with his current occupation as a Maritime Personnel Manager in Florida, to give his tale not only credibility, but a realistic seafaring background. “…you did some time on the Lancer…” “In the Lancer, not on the Lancer” Gale corrected Burke. “What are you talking about?” “A sailor serves in a ship, not on a ship” he explained. Combine this understanding with Brose’s down-to-earth turn of phrase and a raw writing style, (most likely a manifestation of his own familiarity with his personal, knock-about career in the Senior Service), and you’ll find this a very readable tale of foul play on the high seas. If Ian Palmer has more enticing plots involving intelligence operative, Gale, churning around in that creative mind of his, then “Gale Force” could just be the beginning of a whole string of very readable, action- adventure stories from this promising newcomer to the world of undercover intrigue and sea-going fiction? Don’t just grab yourself a copy of this new novel to grace your bookshelf. Find a comfortable chair, settle into it with “Gale Force”, and be carried along with one-hell-of-a fast-paced, gripping yarn. Dave Rickard< Less
