Wood Buffalo Park -- the largest national park in Canada -- straddles the NWT-Alberta border, extending from just south of Great Slave Lake in the Territories all the way south to the Peace-Athabasca Delta and beyond in Alberta. One of its unique features is a large area (hundreds of square miles) featuring groundwater laden with salt dissolved from underground deposits left behind by an ancient sea. In several locations this ground water is forced to the surface and creates accumulations of raw salt left behind by evaporation. The Salt Plains Lookout is accessed by a 13 km gravel road which runs south from NWT Highway 5 some 40 km west of Fort Smith NT.
