The pen lithograph by Hermann Knackfuss on the front cover is a famous artistic representation of the prejudice and ignorance embodied in Yellow Peril feelings. The 'threat' is coming from the East (China and Japan) and the Christian countries of Europe are being warned by the Archangel Michael to protect their dearest possessions. It was damaging nonsense of this kind that Suematsu Kencho was instructed to rebut and refute while in Europe. The chief exponent of Yellow Peril (and in some accounts its inventor) was Kaiser Wilhelm II, and he gave a copy of this lithograph to his younger cousin Tsar Nicholai II in 1895 with the request that he keep Yellow Peril in check. Suematsu waged an extended campaign against Yellow Peril through articles, lectures and speeches. He was well received in London which he used as the base for his operations. At one time early in the war he was led by a reporter of the Paris newspaper Le Temps to discuss peacemaking which was premature and certainly not... More > in his brief. For this Suematsu was reprimanded severely by Komura the then Foreign Minister, and he then broke off contact with Tokyo for about eight months. However he continued his "sacred mission" (momei) throughout that time. His two books 'Risen Sun' and 'A Fantasy of Far Japan' contain the bulk of his writings explaining Japan. I am most grateful to Professor Matsumura for authoring and allowing me to translate this book.< Less
