At Christmas there are numerous nativity plays based on the coming of Christ; at Easter there will be Passion plays, re-enacting the death of Jesus. Many of these are fine attempts to show the importance of the unique events that happened in Palestine 2,000 years ago. Some of these productions will be highly professional and will have an impact on many people. And yet they show events happening in a different time and in a different land – in a different world which we do not experience and struggle to understand or engage with. We are spectators, observing from afar. We are told that God came to us in Jesus – but He can seem a remote figure, irrelevant to our times and our world. We are told that Jesus was born in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago; but what if he had been born in Scotland in more modern times? What would it be like if He lived today, with us? This is what Ian Smith has attempted to think through and portray – bringing Christ to us and to our world. Any such attempt will be a... More > challenge – but one that the author has shown himself equal to. The “Jesus” (or should I say “Josh”) of this book is a real person who struggles with the same issues that we do; he is a good guy; he is attractive – a bloke you’d like to spend time with. And (just like Jesus) he gets into serious trouble with the authorities….. I love the way that Josh is drawn. He is heroic without being predictable. But the text is full of other great characters who all play their part in making the story real; I particularly enjoyed witnessing the relationship between Josh and his Mum – as she strove to come to terms with his independence and his fate. Many years ago I was transfixed by “Man Born to be King” by Dorothy L Sayers. I do not think it is an exaggeration to suggest that “Josh” should be considered in the same category and that the writing of Ian Smith is in the same class as such a genius as Dorothy L Sayers. This is a great work which I wholeheartedly recommend.< Less
