The former London County Council unwittingly created the outline of a small Essex district’s history when it chose names for its out-of-town estate roads.
Samuel Pepys, a visitor to the area, names some of the notables referred to in his diaries. Others, including a notorious rake, celebrated lawyers, still popular authors, curious publishers, spirited agitators and naturalists are amongst the personalities described in more detail here.
