A community event inspired by the “Comics, Creativity, and Culture” Symposium at the University of Iowa, POEMICS brought junior high and high school students together with the Iowa Youth Writing Project’s volunteer Teaching Writers to use the comic-strip form as a tool for close reading of classic poems and unlocking the participants’ own potential as writers, artists, and creative thinkers. The workshop met at the Iowa City Public Library and the North Liberty Community Library in Fall 2011. This book is the result of the participant's creativity and hard work. Limited-edition hard copies are available online at www.prairielights.com or in person at Prairie Lights Bookstore in Iowa City. The IYWP thanks Prairie Lights, UI Arts Share, the Iowa City and North Liberty Libraries, UI Center for the Book, and the IYWP volunteers for making POEMICS possible. Visit www.iywp.org to find out more about the IYWP and make a donation to support future programs like POEMICS.
