The Price of Peace - A Conspiracy of Silence

eBook (ePub)
(2 Ratings)
Price: $3.38
This fascinating, full-length historical novel is based firmly upon facts. Set in the nineteenth century it tells how, in order to avoid a war, a new-born child was smuggled secretly into exile abroad simply BECAUSE SHE WAS A GIRL! From humble beginnings in rural North Wales, the story transports us amid a conspiracy of silence to international political intrigue and a cover-up involving Knights of the Realm, a Church Dignitary, Ministers of State and at least two Crowned Heads. Its true worth has been vastly discounted in the asking price in order that this secret part of our country's history - and that of Northern Europe -should at last be revealed and the staggering events made available to all.

I was riveted by the story. Would like to read more, what happened to the children. Can't wait for the genealogical follow up.

I have just finished reading this book, yesterday I read the first 60 pages and today I finished the book. The 279 pages flew by, a wonderful historical novel complete with two tragic love stories, intrigue, conspiracy and nobility. Irene Lewis Ward has painted a picture for the reader of the environment and in describing the characters in her tale brings it to life. I have looked Frederick VII up via wikipedia and towards the end of the first section it speaks of Fredericks marriage to his ballerina and questions the form of that marriage. Stating that the form of marriage has never been explained, well Irene Lewis Ward explains it thoroughly in the final section of her book. A story yes but what a tale for a family to uncover and share for generations to come. The book is of particular interest to anyone who has a real liking for mystery linked to historical fact. The book would make a good easy read whether you are laying on the beach or curled up in front of the fire on a cold... More > winters day.< Less

OK I know I'm a bit biased as I've known the author for 45 years and know the meticulous research that she and her late husband put into this work. In fact it's 45 years last month (just as man was first-footing the moon!) that she and Bob and began their search. Eleven years later, they found the answer and soon after that she began writing it up. So it has taken 34 years to get the book this far. Is this a record?!! So the story of the research and publication is just as fascinating as the content of this book. (But that's another tale - coming soon!) I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you on many levels - a mystery, a family history, a cracking good read and above all a labour of love.
