The emerging field of narrative ethics is controversial because it incorporates the use of narrative in order to create an impact upon the reader; therefore it is not yet wholly accepted as a valid academic form. In this thesis, Isa McKechnie defends the narrative form as legitimately academic and further explores both the benefits and the drawbacks of narrative ethics. To immediately test her thesis in practice, she has written a narrative – a fable – that presents the intricacy of the arguments that are in existence surrounding the moral status of animals. Through the internal thoughts and the external dialogues of a single character, Sentimus the mouse, she shows the reader a variety of visions that typify the animal ethics debate. This approach allows the reader to reach a point of confidence from where she can take a moral direction that is in concordance with what she perceives as ethical. To find out more go to
