Havasu Means Blue Water is one of those rare novels that lingers in your thoughts long after you've finished the last page. Set in the harsh landscape of the ficticious Wilburn, Arizona; Havasu follows grad student Lyla Amir as she attempts to do thesis research on a hundred-year-old lynching. This straightforward assignment, however, quickly turns into an intriguing investigation into a small town's violent past. Yet the strength of Havasu extends beyond its very likable heroine. In fact, Ivory Simone's rich cast of supporting characters helps to create a deeper and even more powerful image of Wilburn. The various side stories all reinforce the theme that the past still reverberates in the present. So as Lyla gets closer to uncovering repressed and frightening truths, the reader simply cannot turn away; for what Lyla seeks is at the heart of rage and despair. A well timed and intricately layered story, you can't help but get sucked into this page turner!
