Decoding the Night

ByIza Steiner

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Greeks used the stars as a measuring device for navigation and time-keeping. The night sky embodied the immutable and the divine order, which religion sought to follow on earth. Myth was the map to the stars. Hidden behind mundane names, Greek gods are represented in constellations and their interactions describe astronomical movements and positions. Religion arose from the sacred (secret) science of reading stellar movement. Circumpolar stars were considered the most divine and immortal gods, because they never set. Dying and resurrected gods are stars in the mid-latitudes, which set for periods of time and then reappear on the predawn horizon as resurrected gods, emerging from the Underworld. The rise and set stars were the basis of the Greek calendar and the impetus for religious celebrations.
