spent the day re-reading Pilate’s Ghost, and I’m glad I did. I read it when it first came out and enjoyed it, like the other Pilate mysteries, but it was such a departure from his second book, the more light and humorous Pilate’s Key, that I was somewhat surprised by the darkness. So, this weekend, in anticipation of Pilate’s Blood coming out, I decided to sit down and spend some time catching up with John and the characters. Yes, it is darker than Key, and John isn’t as funny, in fact he’s downright brooding at times, but it’s a fine book. The writing is sharper and cleaner than the past books (good to see authors make a progression), and the plotlines are realistic. The best part about Ghost though is the character development. There is a humanness between the characters – you truly feel empathy for them, and the relationships between them are believable. Trevathan has always just been the guy that owned the beach shack and was John’s confidante, but in Ghost, he becomes a more... More > well-rounded good soul. Heck, I even liked Kate more after re-reading Ghost (don’t get me wrong, I’d still like to see Pilate leave her behind in Cross and head back to the beach….). I’m certainly glad that Greenwood decided to go beyond his promise of three books and continue bringing John Pilate back with the release of Pilate’s Blood this week. Readers owe themselves to take another chance with Ghost if it didn’t sit well with them the first go-round. It’s a worthy read.< Less
