‘I want to assure you that I die innocent’. Those were the last words of John Scanlan Esq, of Ballycahane House, Co Limerick, who was hanged on 16 March 1820 for the murder of Ellen Hanley, ‘the colleen bawn’, The Poor Man’s Daughter is one of the earliest accounts of the case on record, written by Michael J Whitty and published in 1824. Reproduced with introduction, notes, research correspondence and bibliography of creative works drawn on the case between 1824 and 1953, it lends weight to the argument that Scanlan was hanged an innocent man.
