By Kenneth Dalecki In the interest of full disclosure, I know Pat Reilly. His success in recreating his sometimes harrowing and often amusing boyhood in Detroit reflects the hard work and attention to detail he put into this multi-year writing project. His use of dialogue is especially effective. Anyone who grew up in this era will enjoy his memoir.

“Snake Music: A Detroit Memoir” is a very well written book on the life of a youngster growing up poor in Detroit. Despite the negative conditions and events that happened to the author, his story is balanced by his prankish humor and his love for music. Overall, the book was enjoyable to read and I highly recommend it.

This book provided me with a vivid description of what it was like to grow up in Detroit during the 1940s and 1950s. It took the reader into the home life and family interactions as well as the school life of a boy who would become a talented scientist. It is a testament to perseverance in the face of many obstacles. J. Patrick Reilly is to be highly commended for not only overcoming the obstacles, but also for having the courage to share his story with us.

I enjoyed this book very much. Mr. Reilly makes old Detroit come to life even if you've never been there; He also gets into the mindset of "a young boy growing up in hard times"; His childhood stories are presented with a good sense of humor. Jerry Lavick - Godfrey, Ill.

A wonderful read ! I had a copy of the book just before New Year and finished reading it in a week among many New Year & family activities. Thanks to "Snake Music - A Detroit Memoir" for a special treat that I've not had for a while. A moving story woven with glimpses of Detroit and suburban life in the early years, the city I have not yet had a chance to see/visit. I hope other readers will find the same experience that I had. As a bonus to readers: a hidden writing talent emerged as you finishing the book knowing that the author has devoted to a 50-year scientific career and a musician. To my previous another favorite author "Watch out Mr Frank McCourt here come J P Reilly !"
