This is the 8th and last Gees novel, published in 1940 (sorry, Ramble House is incorrect here). We read in the novel that Gees has been in business for 3 years now. The matter of the "maker of shadows" is mentioned. Strangely, the matter of Ms Brandon wanting to quit from the last 2 books was never resolved. Seems she is still thinking of doing so. In this one, Gees is called out for another occult threat. A country squire had learned of Gees from Mr Hunter who engaged him in "Nightmare Farm". The squire claims to be descendant from the Volstrum, the basis for the Norse gods. But threatened by a witch nearby. Gees looks into the matter, and as usual, gets involved with things and they don't turn out well for all concerned, including Gees. Tho at the end he winds up with a new companion. A cat. Sadly we never got further stories from Jack Mann to see how Gees & co faired. Did Ms Brandon quit? Did Gees make her more of a partner in the firm. Who knows?
