The North-West Psychodrama Association editorial team is pleased to present this new edition of J.L. Moreno’s Preludes to my Autobiography. This text was first published as a prelude to the 1953 complete edition of Who Shall Survive?, under the title ‘Preludes of the sociometric movement’. Two years later, in 1955 it was published as a stand-alone text in No.34 of the Sociometry Monographs, this time with the title ‘Preludes to my autobiography: Introduction to Who Shall Survive?’. Then in 1989 it was re-printed by Beacon House simply as ‘Preludes to my autobiography’. It is not surprising that the reader might feel somewhat confused re whether this is a textbook on the historical background of sociometry, or if it is an autobiographical reminiscence. It is a bit of both: it gives a timeline-like account of J.L. Moreno’s life from 1910 to the 1950’s, but with a specific focus on the scientific, philosophical and political influences that shaped the development of his ideas on... More > sociometry. As Moreno explains in the closing section of this book, his impetus to write the Preludes came from a well-meaning critic’s suggestion to “mix autobiography with science” in order to clarify the controversy that has often been associated with both him as a person and his ideas. This is Moreno’s attempt to interweave biographical fragments of his life with the developmental phases of his sociometric system, within the context of the effervescent and turbulent times of the early 20th century. This book is a helpful addition to both Moreno’s recently re-published autobiography, as well as his other publications on sociometry. Zoli Figusch (Series editor)< Less
