The Circus is a no-holds-barred depiction of what the vast majority of our deployed soldiers experience in the course of a tour in a combat zone. These tours generally consist of long periods of intense boredom and tedium punctuated by episodes of extreme violence and loss with the resulting emotional turmoil. Jacob's style is informal, yet eminently readable. He takes you into the life of a Gen-X enlisted soldier working in a tactical headquarters in Afghanistan. It is simultaneously absurd, profane, silly, poignant, and completely real in how people really are when fighting a war that is all of the above. Most memoirs are inherently self-serving - but not this one, but then, it's not really a memoir. Jacob states that it is fiction, wrapped in fiction, with a fictiony crust, but it is clearly the result of being there. The main character, VF, is NOT a hero, in his own eyes, or in anyone elses. Yet, that is what makes VF so very much a real hero - an ordinary guy in a very unordinary... More > situation doing the best he can to survive. He isn't larger than life, but he is clearly alive, tormented by the same doubts as the rest of us. After my own 18 months in Afghanistan, The Circus has a prominent place on my bookshelf, and I'm personally recommending it to all of my friends who were there with me. Five stars for bringing it back for me and making me care how it ended! Namaste!< Less
