"I really think that Babbs has a winner here. I've been reading his poems w/ pleasure for several years, & that pleasure continues unabated w/ the publication of this present collection. The poet's two main topics are women & drinking; when he combines these two to form a third category, he successfully reproduces feelings of loneliness & real pathos. In brief vignettes, Babbs captures fugitive bits of a sort of life wherein happiness is momentary & fleeting. I want to buy this fellow a case of beer & sit down w/ him for an all-night talk." (John Berbrich, Editor-Barbaric Yawp) "The blurb given is 'poems about women and drinking. What else is there?' Well, a lot more. The Bacchusian school is one not oft encountered here. Babbsian output is in short, punchy prose like lines. A couple of beers watching the boob tube, uttering sweet nothings into the ear of some dumb blonde, sexual arousal and, damn, who knows where it goes then? Surrounded by the... More > usual bar trash when at the tavern, the voice of the poems relates his surroundings. Drunken oafs fighting over some bitch. Some shallow tart laughing at him because he's succumbed to her power. The hovering lust experienced through the haze of intoxication. Regret when the alluring cunt has gone. That was 90% of it. There were exceptions such as 'It Happens All the Time,' when Babbs gets into an evocation of universal human despair but that's a rarity in this collection." (Arnold Skemer, Editor-ZYX)< Less
