Jim Richmond’s book, “War on the Middleline,” is a superbly detailed study of a community immersed in the conflict of America’s War of Independence. Richmond starts with the rather rocky beginnings of the settlement, which was carved out of traditional Mohawk lands, and moves through its development stages until war confronts the settlers and forces them to make political decisions. He concentrates on a particularly stark event in 1780, when a force of American loyalist Provincials and Indian Department rangers, many of them settlers from the Middleline and area, supported by Fort Hunter Mohawks strike along the Middleline and its primary community, Ballstown, and carry off a number of rebel officers and men of the local militia to imprisonment in Canada. Of course, many of the protagonists had been neighbours, some even friends; however, a civil war creates divisions. Richmond weaves the tales of these men and women into a fascinating study.
