Times were tumultuous for Scotland, for not only was the country a victim of King Henry the VIII's wrath, but it was thoroughly shaken by the effects of the religious clashes as well. The main character, Maolcolm of Duncoileen, blithely wanders through the events of the century along pilgrim tracks that reveal all sorts of real and imagined characters, some zany and some quite fearsome. All have a stake in the object of Maolcolm's journey. The journey, incidentally, is a far cry from the Irish monastery in which he was raised. However, the old ways including the beliefs, myths, and legends are disppearing and Maolcolm must complete his mission to plant some of the "old world" into the fertile soil of a new age. The story is picked up by a modern day Malcolm and brought to a bittersweet conclusion.
