In this short story James Hall paints a picture of the not so distant past--a time when one might hear the whippoorwill call of Casey Jones' train whistle echoing in the distance. Hall sprinkles the narrative of young Ray Lillibridge, an outsider from the west trying to fit into the new landscape of Illinois, with tall tales and songs of the late 1800s right at the time of Chicago's World Fair. While the events of the story take place over a hundred years ago, its themes are reminiscent of one's own childhood. The resulting tale is a fun and entertaining--perfect for reading to your children before bed or around the campfire on your own Mackinaw Island trip. You'll finish eager for the next installment of Ray "Sniper" Lillibridge's adventures, I know I did!
