I read this right away, hot off the press. Then I lent it to several people because I liked it so much. So did my friends. With the book out of sight, I forgot to tell people on Lulu that Jim had written something that was so engaging that everyday chores could be ignored until the book was finished. I was stolen away to another time and place by Jim's precise descriptions of his life on a farm back in the forties, a life containing hard physical work, a bustling family, and a high school that, in order to attend it, he had to go live in town and board with another family. A curious, eager, winning student, he was, at the same time, beset with questions about himself. He spends time trying to figure out the answers. I found myself cheering him on, absorbed by the writing, so earnest and candid and humorous. It is easy to recommend this book!

When you slip into this narrator's world, you'll want everyone to leave you alone so you can read. The Facts of Life is a compelling work with all the color of the era told by a one-of-a-kind narrator.
