The Mannequin is a collection of poetry held together by different parts of the often seen plastic modellers of clothing. Each poem focuses on a particular body part with the title holding the strands of poetry together and is one of the most innovative ideas I have seen. As is always the case with James' work, his poetry shows a captivating understanding of words and an awe inspiring breadth of vocabulary. I have always enjoyed the way that James' words fire parts of my brain, normally dusty and underused. His use of form and cadence is something that stretches my understanding and sends my imagination into areas that it never even knew existed. He clearly has an expert grasp of the form and accepted process for a poem but then, rebelliously, hurls the form book through the window and does what the hell he likes anyway. Reading James' work is very much like someone pinching at your synapses, holding on for dear life, whilst at the same time crushing your wind pipe. This is not... More > intended to put you off reading his work, actually quite the opposite, as you finish the book feeling changed and challenged all at the same time. Poetry being such a personal experience, I am sure each reader will have a different take, all equally valid. All I can offer you is my personal insights into The Mannequin, you will then have to make your own discoveries. The Mannequin, then, is an inspired book of poetry which throws the readers, caterwauling, into the dark recesses of James' mind. Here is a world where a simple walk along a beach can uncover a grinning set of false teeth (Jaws) or listen to the musings of a body part often overlooked (the Neck) Look no further if the normal and mundane Valentine's messages are of no interest as James has birthed a wonderful, if macabre alternative (Chest.) Accompanying each poem is an image created by Susan and at no stage do they detract or overpower the words. Interestingly, the layout for the book is such that your eyes are drawn to the artwork first (it appearing on the right page rather than the more typical left) Having taken in the visual feast that Susan's artwork provides you then read James words and the two collaborate together to form a mystical and powerful force. James' poetry will appeal to both the newcomer or the well versed poetry fiends. I cannot recommend The Mannequin highly enough, it is simply one of the most accomplished works of poetry I have read for a very long time. Get a copy! David Martin - TheCultDen< Less
