What makes this petite histoire so vivid and gripping is the totally frank diary Rentschler kept, and on which so much of this book is based, through those three decades he represented the United States in Brazil, Morocco, Upper Volta, Romania and France as well as serving Presidents Carter and Reagan on the National Security Council.
