A modern day English archer is approached by a mysterious Arab who claims to live in a parallel world in Spain that is five hundred years behind his own. He is invited to take part in an archery tournament where losing can bring about the downfall of a civilised world and the future freedom of a beautiful woman at the hands of an evil sorcerer. He will also have to go against all the values he holds dear in a land where killing is almost as normal as breathing and the price of life is survival of the fittest. He knows it cannot possibly be real...or can it? And once there in this strange world, can he come back?

Dec 1, 2006"MORO" ‘Moro’ by Jim Morris is an amazing book, one of the best fantasy stories I have ever read. Is it a fantasy? Find out for yourself. Initially, the reader is lulled into a false sense of security by the down-to-earth setting of a typically English village in the craggy hills of Derbyshire. The hero, Rod Moor, is a footloose and fancy-free professional artist and skilled archer who enjoys nothing better than a few hours at his easel, followed by a little archery practise and a visit to the local pub. In short, he has the kind of existence that others only dream about. His life takes a dramatic change of direction when he meets an exotic stranger and is transported into a parallel world, of romance, intrigue, murder and mystery in the setting of a Moorish kingdom. To say more, if you’ll pardon the pun, would be to say too much. This swashbuckling tale with its many twists and turns makes compelling reading. Suspension of disbelief is aided by the carefully researched and... More > very interesting history of the Moors, which threads its way through the book and by the author’s knowledgeable explanations of the finer points of archery. I would think that Jim Morris enjoyed writing this book. It is certainly a rattling good read which should appeal to a wide readership. I was left wishing to know what happened next and I understand that this book is the first in a trilogy. I can’t wait to read the next instalment.< Less
Oct 24, 2006"Moro" I really enjoyed this book, so different and original was the story. The descriptions left me smelling the lemon scent and feeling the sultry summer sun of Spain. The book takes you on a fantasy journey with Roderigo Moor, back in time through a unique method, and when you first become aquainted with the charasmatic Ahmed you're totally hooked on this book.A 'feel good' story, with a good deal of History which didnt swamp the pages, but made one aware of the knowledge the Author has of this region in Spain.
Jul 1, 2006"A Modern day 'Arabian Nights' story." ‘Moro’ by James Morris is a tale of Fantasy, Magic and Adventure. An English archer finds that he is magically transferred to another time and place and a fast paced adventure. The Novel has all the elements of an exciting story including beautiful women, sorcerers, magic and exciting locales that the author appears to have visited and researched well. This fast paced adventure written in a style that has become rare today will remind the reader of Arabian Nights and entertain him thoroughly. Poetic contributions from the ‘Rubiyat’ and the author enrich the literary quality of this work. James Morris writes well and much as I would like to find something to criticize in his work, I have been unable to find any thing in that direction. This book is highly recommended for anyone who loves a good fantasy novel.
Jun 18, 2006"An Englishman in Moorish Spain" The Fifteenth Century “Guardians” of Moorish culture in Spain developed a way to preserve their land outside the stream of time avoiding the Christian conquest of Ferdinand and Isabella. Nor did technological advances of the outside world sully this world over the next six centuries. Rod Moor, a modern day Englishman, is introduced into this parallel universe through methods, presumably magical but not as yet explained in this first book of a trilogy and as incomprehensible to him as arrival on Mars was to John Carter. The protagonist is a talented artist and, most important, a toxophilite of international caliber. He is brought to Spain of his own volition by one of the Guardians to take part in an archery contest, part as he understands it of some larger and immeasurably important struggle between good and evil to prerserve this world. The nature of this struggle and true consequences of loss are not fully explained in this first book. Our... More > hero is only concerned with winning his competition, remaining alive despite the best efforts of an evil villain and not getting into too much trouble with the requisite beautiful women whose veils are not opaque. Naturally he is not entirely successful. This is an excellent first novel and an enjoyable read for devotees of fantasy. Unanswered questions regarding the nature of the Guardians, their magical abilities and the purpose of their struggle will have to wait for the remainder of the trilogy.< Less
Jun 17, 2006"Re: A Modern day 'Arabian Nights' story." Ashok. Your review fills me with delight and I much appreciate the views of an experienced author. I am also very grateful for your time and patience. I just hope the story compensated in some way towards this. I am now very keen to get on with the follow-up two books in the trilogy. These are called "Christiano" and "The Sword of Saladin". Again, many, many thanks. James.
