James Gillespie recounts the days of his childhood and youth with a plain-spoken but eloquent style. Born in China as a twin son of Baptist missionaries, Gillespie narrates the events of a young life split between two continents-- contrasting the turmoil of pre-World War II China under Japanese occupation with the often stark realities of the 1930’s Depression in rural North Carolina-- then continuing to depict how the drama of World War II deeply affected his family. His stories are by turns whimsical, humorous, and poignant, told with grace and charm.

Great storytelling! A nice long string of little vignettes, that all come together as a great story with many ups and downs. I sat down to read the first few pages, and ended up reading the whole first half in one sitting. You will like it if you like "easy-reads" that pack a nice punch.
