Capturing snapshots of the physical and emotional experiences of the journey of childhood through adulthood, "Whiskey and the Rake of Mourning" touches on the complexities between father and son and their often lifelong echoes. Both spacious and specific, each passage feels effortlessly anchored between what has come before and what is yet to be. Powerful and poignant, Tolan's evocative language suggests that amidst pain and redemption, hope and acceptance, some tales are not complete until they are told.

While Jim Tolan evokes summers past that bring us to the lake to swim or to the ball field to play, the journey homeward (and inward) is fraught with a child’s fear and longing for paternal love. The tightly-linked poems in this collection are at turns wistful, shocking, and saddening. In the end, however, the poet hints at a certain triumph and renewal. Tolan’s voice is clear, pointed, yet never strident. Despite some unsettling occurrences, there is loveliness to these poems, for Tolan presents us with finely-drawn moments of pain, epiphany, and hope. Whiskey and the Rake of Mourning is a summer read that is unlike any I have experienced. Well worth owning in paper and passing on to your friends.
