Geologist and science journalist Arie Petrovich travels to his home town of Walnut Creek, California to write an article about new seismic monitoring equipment being installed along active faults in the San Francisco Bay Area. A devastating earthquake strikes his hometown during his visit, leaving hundreds dead, including the two seismologists who were subjects of his interview. Although local law enforcement feels that the two are just more earthquake casualties, he notices inconsistencies, and he takes it upon himself to aid in a deeper investigation. He soon finds himself calling upon his science background, his professional connections, and his knowledge of the area to not only participate in the detective work, but to track down the conspirators of a huge cover up.
