The Yonezawa Matchlock. Mighty Gun of the Uesugi Samurai
Hardcover, 250 Pages
Prints in 3-5 business days
This is a book about the famous Uesugi-family and their history from the 15th century until the fall of the shogunate. What makes this book truly unique is that it also takes an indepth look at the history of the Japanese matchlock. The Uesugi lords and their retainers managed to develop a quite unique style of matchlock which would serve them from the Siege of Osaka in 1614 until the very end of the Edo period. This development took place in the old castle-town of Yonezawa which was home to the Uesugi-clan. This is one of the first books ever written in English that focus on the Japanese matchlock and how it influenced the samurai who lived and fought under the shadow of their famous ancestor Uesugi Kenshin. This is a book for everyone interested in samurai history. The content is based on four years of research and several trips to the region.

Dec 9, 2017Hi! I have now read the book. It was an utter pleasure. I had the idea that, due to my perception of a narrow subject, it might be very technical and attract mostly hard core tepponistas. This is not the case. The book gives an exellent historical recollection of the history of the Uesugi clan, their developement from the Momoyama all the way to the end of the Edo period. It also gives insights in the hardship for the peasants and samurai alike. The book is just as much a history book in general as a specific tale of the development and use of matchlocks, not only in Yonezawa, but all over japan. It offers new insights and topples old preconceptions and also opens up for new theories regarding the origin of certain matchlocks. This is a book to read, not only for the few collectors of these lovely guns but for everyone interested in japanese history. I strongly recommend to read it. Anthony de Vos
Nov 12, 2017I totally enjoyed this book , it’s a very difficult subject to bring across without being “ an anorak “ but Jan has achieved this seamlessly... his knowledge and love of the subject shows through and I especially liked the way I felt “ in tune “ with most of the characters... a very well researched book on a subject almost impossible to find any information on. I will find myself returning to this book..I’m looking forward to the next project
Oct 27, 2017We are long overdue for a new English edition on Japanese matchlock history. My first introduction to them was in the novel "Shogun" by James Clavell. Following this I had purchased a 17th century Tokugawa mon matchlock, a massive 60 caliber hand cannon, but with beautifully engraved and gold inlaid script. Getting information on it was futile, as all the books were in Japanese language. It wasn't until I read an article in the 1950 Journal "The Gun Collector" that I acquired basic knowledge, then more advanced knowledge from Sugeo Sugawa's "The Japanese Matchlock". Jan Peterson's book promises a great deal more knowledge, and he looks set to become the leading English scholar on this arcane topic.
