Cowardice. Bravery. War calls to the best and the worst in humanity. Ordinary people answer that call in different ways: by finding their courage, by acting from the basest weakness, or by avoiding the call for as long as possible. An account of loss and reconciliation, collaboration and resistance, and the flowering of courage in unlikely soil, TAKE THE WAR tells an untold tale from the 20th century's World Wars. Based on true stories, including unpublished letters and diaries of heroines living and dead, TAKE THE WAR captures the Resistance roles played by women in WWI and WWII in France and Belgium. A new contribution to war literature, a story untold, TAKE THE WAR sheds light on the experience of ordinary women who attempt to navigate daily life in wartime settings, while finding their courage and becoming heroes.

by lavalentine In Take the War, Janice Decker has weaved an intricate tale, yet historically correct. The main characters' lives are shaped by the events surrounding war torn Europe. The author has managed to cover several decades of time, transform each character and keep this reader interested, entertained and clamoring for more. It is a moving story and will keep you spellbound until the end. Highly recommend.

This haunting story follows two generations of Resistance fighters in WWI and WWII France and Belgium. Written with a lyrical prose that is often in stark contrast to the scenes it paints, TAKE THE WAR offers an exceptional journey through Germaine Mirot’s experiences during WW1 and later her daughter Anjanette’s experiences during WWII, both sucked into the Resistance effort by a dangerous combination of chance and love. Thorough research, including story lines based on actual events excerpted from original diaries and letters, brings a mesmerizing authenticity to the characters and settings. The book asks difficult questions: “How many human thoughts make up the river of time and circumstance that carry us to our fate? … Can we stand on the shore, untouched? Or are we destined to step into the water, to cross, to swim when the depth overtakes us, to battle the currents? And when we’ve crossed, where are we then?” And as the pages unfold and we are immersed in the horrors and... More > brutality of war, we wonder what we would have done had we been faced with similar circumstances. Janice Decker has captured the essence of those critical decision points in life – when ordinary people are faced with extraordinary decisions – with her strong (but flawed), memorable and vibrant characters and remarkable story. This is an exceptional book from a new voice.< Less
