Mar 22, 2016A rationale of 'Checkers' Asylum, by the Author. On the first level, Checkers' Asylum is the story of a tragic antihero, who has given up a normal life to go live by himself and his imagination underground in the sewers. He draws cartoons and goes out every night to fight crime, but he gets carried away and everything turns into a cartoon version of itself in his mind. During his battles with his hallucinated cartoon villains, he loses touch with reality and has trouble deciphering what is real and what is only in his head. Checkers is on the trail of Mutino, who is ritualistically murdering people and arranging their corpses in macabre positions, leaving few clues which have the police baffled. Only Checkers' has the means to catch Mutino as long as he can control his overactive imagination before it is too late. However, Checkers' Asylum goes deeper than that on a more psychological level. It is a commentary on mental illness and perception, blurring the lines between truth and... More > paranoid delusion. An extreme view on the human condition and how it is impossible to escape it no matter how you try to isolate, for it will always find you. Checkers' Asylum combines dark and gritty aesthetics in the comic pages of his realistic life, as seen from an outside point of view,(which sometimes Checkers' even breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to the reader) with the bright and colourful yet zany and violent cartoon stylization of his hallucinated adventures in his mind's eye. Complete with an intense and driving story of good versus evil that also provides the backstory of Checkers and how he came to be the way he is. Read it if you liked movies like Se7en, Cool World and The Crow.< Less
