In 1988, Holyoke, Massachusetts, was a once thriving city coping
with recession. Making it worse was the loss of Mountain Park,
the city’s beloved amusement park. From these seemingly grim
circumstances, a resident named John Hickey decided it was time
to turn those circumstances around by saving the park’s vintage
merry-go-round and placing it in the heart of the downtown area.
Featuring dozens of color photographs, this is the inspiring story
of that unprecedented effort which united a community
and saved an important part of their history.

This is Ducharme's second Mountain Park-related (Holyoke, Massachusetts) book, and both of them are excellent. I read "The Happiness Machine" in a single sitting of several hours and marveled at enthusiasts, and later, the Holyoke communities' gargantuan effort to save their Mountain Park carousel for future generations to enjoy. The Happiness Machine is a factual account describing toil, determination through adversity, community spirit and SUCCESS! I recommend this publication enormously. S.A.S.
