The Bhagavata Purana is widely recognized as the best-known and most influential of the 18 Puranas. It is important in Indian religious literature for its emphasis on the practice of devotion and for its detailed description of the incarnations of God in human form. It is the source of many popular stories of Krishna's childhood and of legends explaining Hindu cosmology and philosophy. The Bhagavata declares itself as the essence of all Vedic literature.
