Journey to the West is a Chinese novel attributed to Wu Cheng'en. The novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang who traveled to the Western Regions to obtain Buddhist sacred texts sand returned after many trials and suffering. The novel adds elements from folk tales such as Gautama Buddha gave this task to the monk Tang Sanzang and provided him with three helpers. These disciples are the monkey Sun Wukong, the pig Zhu Bajie and the ogre Sha Wujing, together with a dragon prince who acts as a white horse.
