"Wal-Mart Chronicles" One part Bill Simmons, one part Tom Robbins, and a dash of Delillo is the recipe for Dr. Kradel's writings. Deep fried, of course, with a side of Ben and Jerry's (best eaten at 2 a.m.) Funny, depressing, insightful, your mood might just direct the interpretation of these quasi-autobiographical journeys through the daily life of a small town ER doc. These stories show that writing can be simply complex, and life can be hilariously depressing. By the end of the first story you become curious about the next, and after a few you start to hold out hope for the characters, that everything will be all right. The toothless patient, the over-the-hill former friend with benefits, the misfit child of a potential lover. These are the underdogs of humanity, and Dr. Kradel's biting take on contemporary culture and the art of self-loathing is both a satisfying read and a glimpse into the mind of a brilliant writer.
