JIA DAO (Chia Tao) 779-843, was a poet from
The Tang capital of Chang’an, born in Hebei—
and entered a Buddhist order when young.
He left the monastery around 810 to be a follower of Han Yu. He spent the rest of my life in
Chang’an, except for minor official posts in years before his death.
In the early 9th. Century his group's strong belief was the moral efficacy of poetry
and the importance of traditional values, which led to experiments with a wide variety of poetic styles, in order to extend the range of themes,
diction and vocabulary acceptable in a poem.
He was a successful poet, however some of the critics have found my work lacking in intellectual depth.
