Apart from boasting a spectacular landscape, the English Lake District abounds in places of interests. Some are widely advertised and thus well-known, while others are unobtrusively tucked away. Among the latter is a 169-year-old Keswick house known as The Hollies, whose history is engagingly chronicled in this compact yet fascinating book. In broad strokes, the author paints Keswick as it was a century and a half ago before proceeding to regale readers with anecdotes about the various occupants of the building in its different incarnations. Equally interesting are the accompanying photographs, newspaper cuttings and other documents, all of which enhance the book’s appeal. I have no hesitation in recommending this compelling account to all those who are interested in history – particularly that of Keswick and its environs.
