As a fellow polio survivor I can relate to everything Jean talks about in her memoir. She captures the daily challenges anyone faces whose body is compromised, but she never looses sight of how those challenges can be overcome and be used to enhance one's growth. The pictures speak volumes about her positive attitude. If you are looking for inspiration to keep you going, information as a caretaker of someone with a disability, or simply a good read, buy this book. Buy several and give them away.

Very interesting format, quite interesting, and enjoyable to read. I grew up in the 1950's and took the oral polio vaccines. However, I really never knew much about the disease. In particular, I didn't know that many who contracted polio early in life faced additional consequences later in life. The author provides unique insights into her lifetime experience with polio and does it in a very positive manner. I recommend this book.

This is one of the most readable books I have encountered. Part how-to, part autobiographical, part informational with lots of original photos, this book gives us insights into the life of the author who speaks plainly about her own disability. Not only for caregivers, this would make an ideal gift for anyone who has worried over a loved one who is losing physical independence, or may feel awkward around someone with a disability. Jean Hartley speaks frankly about the devastation of a degenerative disease and its accompanying emotional impact. Yet, "Go Beyond- Coping with Disability" is not a "downer." It is inspirational as it offers hope with practical coping skills paired with Ms. Hartley's own testimony. This book has broad applications and I recommend it.

This book was an interesting mix of facts, humor, interactive quizzes, and moving life experiences. It gave me an understanding of what challenges Jean has overcome. It is helpful for anyone who is a caregiver or has limited mobility. There are many practical ideas for coping. I highly recommend it. It would be a good birthday or Christmas gift.
