An impressive Tour-de-force by Dr. Potet. This simple volume is comprehensively thorough in its scope while carefully organized into easily readable pieces. Potet not only explains the writing system itself, but also discusses the development of the system and its similarities to the writing systems from which it must have developed, including sanscript (the closest related writing style) and the effects of Spanish influence upon the language. One cannot help but marvel at the depth of the information presented -- who knew that so much could be said of sixteen phonograms and a diacritic mark? Most interesting of all, Potet discusses at length the principal failing of the system (its inability to record terminal sounds of syllables) and why this may not have hindered written communication of its day. Anyone who is interested in Tagalog, languages of South East Asia, or language development in general will find this book a welcome addition to their library.
