Running a store is hard work. You need to get the store built, enter your products, test the site for security, find potential customers, entice them to purchase, and fulfill their orders. This book aims to make your task a little bit easier and hopefully even show you some great techniques that will help make the Internet work for you. These techniques are applicable to all stores built with Zen Cart whether you are a new e-tailer just starting out, a traditional store with retail outlets looking to break into the online world, or are well established online with your store and simply want to improve what you're doing.

Jeff starts out well in this realtively straight-forward guide, but offers advice that can actually be found for "free" by doing some quick searches on the Zen Cart forum, FAQ and Tutorials - as well as on the Search Engines themselves. His initial practical advice however, turns sour when he advocates the use of "SEO Modules" - software "plugins" that use URL re-write techniques to render page-specific "static" URLs, rather than the dynamic links generated by the Zen Cart software. For example, he points to a "blog" item by Matt Cutts that was written about 6 years ago that discusses something that is functionally obsolete. Here we are now, in 2010, and one would expect that the subject of SEO would have been more topically and thoroughly researched. Despite what the author suggests (about using "SEO Modules") it is now widely advocated by many experts - including the technical teams at Google - that URL re-writing is no... More > longer necessary, is NOT recommended, and in fact, could be doing more HARM than good to your site's SERP results. While the following link is 2 years old, it is extremely relevant: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/dynamic-urls-vs-static-urls.html So, everything the author advocates for SEO URL's can (and should) be ignored. Everything you need to know about Zen Cart SEO can actually be found at this URL by one of the more noted and respected Zen Cart SEO advisors: http://pro-webs.net/blog/2009/09/10/zen-cart-seo-12-steps/ In summary then... Some useful tips here and there, but a lot of "advice" which is based on obsolete and/or redundant SE behaviours should be treated with caution. Again, nothing (of value) in this book that cannot be found relatively easily (for free) on the Zen Cart site, or the WWW in general.< Less
