This book has been a culmination of long-time vision, some key leadership, and a confluence of industry events. Almost fifteen years ago, the author gained a passion for helping developers succeed, for making the complex simple, and for finding rules of thumb that would work for 80% of situations. With too many options in the software world and too many answers of “it depends”, the industry has been starved for the ability to do something “by the book.” This book seeks to provide that text where a .NET developer can say “I’m doing DevOps with .NET and Azure by the book.” In this manner, one would know what models and patterns were in play and what to expect from said environment.

For many years now, the term DevOps has been shakily defined, and seemingly only implemented by organizations with enormous budgets and dedicated teams. Many IT professionals feel frustrated that their legacy applications are hindered by running on old technology, and that they are spending costly time just maintaining the system, failing to deliver needed features, and suffering through risky deployments. Countless tools and guides are available to combat certain aspects of this unfortunate situation, but none of them are comprehensive so they can only deliver piecemeal results at best. To date, there has been no blueprint to directly lead IT professionals on a path to achieving a smooth-running modern DevOps environment that allows them to shift their efforts to enhancing business outcomes. .NET DevOps for Azure by Jeffrey Palermo changes all of that. This book (and the accompanying public Azure DevOps sample project) is that blueprint for a fully functional Microsoft and Azure... More > based DevOps environment. You are first introduced to foundational DevOps principles that are reinforced throughout the guide. These concepts are valid no matter which platforms or technologies you encounter. You will be taught to visualize the cycle of planning, coding, packaging, releasing, operating, monitoring, and learning that comprises a holistic and unified DevOps process. You will then be coached through setting up a basic, yet practical, reference implementation of a DevOps project. The learnings from this exercise will inform the journey you will undertake to modernize and streamline your own application environment. If you’ve been looking for a comprehensive guide to assist in your IT organization’s transformation to a more efficient and productive team, then you will want .NET DevOps for Azure.< Less

.NET DevOps for Azure walks you through automating your development process in AzureDevOps. With clear guidance and solid advice from setting up your Azure Boards, to building pipelines, to testing and monitoring, Jeffery helps you fall into the 'pit of success.' If you are apprehensive about moving your application to Azure, this book gives you a method that just will work. The accompanying repository and public AzureDevOps project provide a valuable example of how to get an application up and running. Even though he does have a prescribed happy-path process, he often points out where and why you will want to change parts of the process.
