Jamilia had just climbed into bed, her clothes for tomorrow neatly stacked on the shelf next to the bed, when she heard the engines stop. Why would the engines stop in the middle of the ocean? Then, her senses fully awake, she felt a bump. What was that? As she lay there, holding her breath and listening, a growing sense of anxiety and endangerment overcame her. It is April 1912. Jamila and Elias are alone on a steamship in the middle of the Atlantic without parents and unable to speak English. How did they get here and will they survive? ‘Journey to the Titanic: the Story of the Yarred Family’ is the story of one Lebanese families immigration to the United States at the turn of the 20th Century. Told with respect and humanity this story is a good introduction to Lebanese culture and history. At 63,000 words it is a comfortable read for young adults and contains no vulgarity, violence or sex. Faith in God is lightly interwoven throughout the story.

The book 'Journey to the Titanic' was a good book. I really enjoyed the ending part during the sinking. It was short, but detailed. My favorite character was Jamilia. She is a fair, smart, proper but yet curious girl, and I found her to be somewhat like myself. [Destiny 7th grade student in California] My favorite part in JTTT was when the family was getting checked to see if they could go on the Titanic because I enjoyed the explanation of what happened and I like guessing what was going to happen (who would get in/wouldn't). I used this book as a shared reading in my 7th grade l.a. and s.s. classes. It has many connections to 7th grade world history (CA state standards) and many instances to show good examples of grade level conventions such as colons, semi-colons, possessives, etc. as well as advanced vocabulary for continuous learning. Students were very interested and anxious to read each day. I strongly suggest using this book as either a shared reading or interactive read aloud at the middle grade level.
