Oct 15, 2009"Er...unusual" No dialogue? No chapters? I'm afraid that equals no characters and no momentum. "Show, don't tell" is a great maxim – this is all 'tell', and as such leaves no space for the reader to inhabit (particularly important in good fantasy fiction).
Jun 18, 2007"Re: Er...unusual" I could not figure out why this review did not sound right and an english teacher told me why not long ago-it is by someone who had not read the book at all. He took the description and wrote a review based on it. The intentional vagueness used was to not give much away, not because the novel is not worthy of a better description! Look-it WON the NaNoWriMo challenge in less than 20 DAYS! It was not even the original idea I started with! And it's set in a world I created in a span of twenty years and is the future of a pair of novels I have yet to complete. The concept of no chapters and very little dialogue came from a person not known for having extensive dialogue in his writings-HP Lovecraft and his "Dream-quest to Unknown Kadath". I guess Lovecraft's work is "flat" and "all show, no tell", too, since the only dialogue he has is Nyarlahotep's lengthy diatribe near the end of a tale only about twenty or thirty pages shorter... More > than mine. One thing no person has ever had to say about my characters is that they are "flat". Great pains were taken to make the Sea of Mystics and the characters in it as vivid as possible and I edited it only enough because I sought to keep the feeling it had with the NaNoWriMo original. The other experimental factor was a "rhythmic prose" form I was attempting-and I think I was pretty successful with-to give the story a sort of bard retelling the story feel. For example, there's a part where Styrkar and Kaisa have to do a test of three pyramids where sections were copied and retyped as a sort of free form prose-poetry. This appears in the novel several times, but is not even commented on by our intrepid reviewer, whose only apparent motive is to guarantee no one reads this book. Why not give it and try and write a real review? I won't hate a bad review if it trult deserves it. But this is my first novel and I'm pretty happy with what I created. I want you to try it.< Less
