From Jenny Barth Bornstein’s sprightly introduction to her newborn self, she draws us effortlessly into the domestic and cultural world of Jewish-German Berlin from 1859 to 1879. We accompany this unusual young lady through her love of literature and music, her visits with a large, affectionate family, and her growing awareness of the complexity of human relationships. Jenny’s lively spirit and high intelligence make her memoir thoroughly enjoyable for the general reader. The history scholar, too, will benefit from this book. For example, Jenny’s cherished promenades with her Papa through the Tiergarten depict not only a touching father-daughter connection but also an enjoyment of nature not usually associated with nineteenth-century European Jews. An absorbing, delightful, and significant read! Louisa Schell Hoberman, Ph.D. in History

It's amazing and heartwarming to think that Jenny Bornstein's memoir sat in a niece's house for 70 years and now has found new life and a new audience in this translation. As I worked on formatting this book for the editors [disclosure: I coordinated turning the manuscript into a print publication through my publishing services business] I was struck by Jenny's ear for the songs and tunes of her time. Her memory for musical details, and for so many other details from 70 years before, are quite remarkable and bring her story vividly to life. Jane Ross, MJR Publishing Services.
