"'Beat: A Study of Musical Youth' By Jenny Dale" ‘Beat: A Study of Musical Youth’ is a striking collection of images which convey the obvious passion of both the subjects and photographer have towards the world of music and performance. This is augmented by the short paragraph at the forefront of the book, where the author reveals the close relationship between herself and the theme of the book. Split into three clearly defined sections, with full-bleed print format, the images have great impact and really give a sense of the music being performed. There is heavy emphasis on the equipment, with close-up, almost abstract shots focusing in on parts of the instruments as they are being played. I was particularly struck by the images where the fingerprints of an individual were as clearly pronounced as the instrument. Such tangible imagery really gives the feeling of ‘being there’. The use of double page spread acts as a further device to draw the eye into the image, fully... More > engrossing the reader in the content. The images appear in sequential order, letting the reader see the events unfold as they happened, lending an almost story-like quality to the book, from rehearsal, promotion, and final performance. This is achieved without the use of text (except for the opening statement), letting the images speak for themselves. I find this approach most effective in the photo-book format, as text can sometimes be superfluous. The book is following a particular group of students, and there is a real sense that by the end of the book the reader has gained an insight into the identities of the subjects. There is an extremely intimate feel to the close-up shots of performances, as well as the portrait style shots and inclusion of details, such as the clothing and piercings of individuals. A lot of care has been taken with the appearance of the images, with great use of colour and composition, and attention to detail. There are a few images that I feel are unessential and could have been left out without affecting the ‘storyline’, but over all I think Jenny has done a fantastic job of compiling and editing the right amount of images to fully convey the nature of the students and their endeavours. There is a true sense of the ‘beat’, or rhythm of the music, and enthusiasm of both photographer and musician within this dynamic book. Artemis Meereis< Less
