This is an incredibly inspirational and thought-provoking story about best friends who face different obstacles as they enter a race based on their differences. It is written in a light-hearted context, yet sends a powerful message. The illustration is fun, lively and colorful. A great find for parents and educators! By speaking openly about similarities and differences between people and by joining with our children to recognize and talk about discrimination, we can help them become adults who work to end it. Parents of children of color have been having these types of conversations with their children out of necessity and for their own protection for decades. White parents have been able to avoid these difficult conversations with their children, which is the very essence of white privilege. As kids try to make sense of their environment they are exposed to pervasive cultural messages and pick up on the ways in which whiteness is normalized and privileged in society. White children... More > are afforded a range of privileges and protections that children of color are not afforded, and without explaining the structural racism behind those privileges kids may infer that they are caused by inherent differences between groups. In other words, they may start to believe that white people have more privilege because they are inherently, somehow, smarter or better. However free from prejudice we may be, our children, even very young children, can absorb the biases they encounter outside of our homes. By talking openly and listening without censure, we can learn about our children's concerns and help them find connections between larger social issues and their own life experiences. By behaving as though racism has nothing to do with us we are condoning the racial injustice in our society and colluding in the suffering of people of color. Highly recommend this book!< Less
