At aged sixty, the author began a long-held promise to herself to spend a year in her little tin beach shack, writing and painting. "Gathering Driftwood review" I have just put Gathering Driftwood down and thoroughly enjoyed the many stories within this one story. It would have been interesting enough just reading the main story, the year in the shack, but it would have remained two dimensional. All of the events that happened outside of the shack in your friends and families lives are part of your life and the decisions you made to be there would have no meaning without all of the back stories leading to the move. I felt this also made the book a page-turner, that I was part of an unfolding event. And I was disappointed when it was over. I wanted more! I also liked the battle with snakes element. It gave more depth to the spiritual discussions because it is an issue that was never resolved, that it remained a contradiction to so many things you believed. And you can only understand this when you live with snakes. Piety and reality do not necessarily have to sit hand in hand! Thank you Jenny, it is a... "Gathering Driftwood Review" Take time out to sit back and enjoy this gentle journey through the author's life. With beautifully descriptive language Jenny Opie, now in her 60's, reflects on her abundant life by keeping a diary of musings over a 12 month period. Home for Jenny is now the simple peace and tranquility of a remote seaside shack in South Australia. With husband Patrick, Jenny paints, writes and gathers driftwood but it was not always this way. We learn about Jenny's family and friends, her travels, her experiences setting up a commune and her varied interests including a successful career as an Interior Designer. Buddhist teachings are woven into the text in a subtle way. A thoroughly enjoyable and wise book that does not succumb to cloying nostalgia. Highly recommended.

Jenny Opie’s delightful account of a year in her life spent in her ‘shack’ is much more than a diary of events over a twelve month period. Jenny interweaves her philosophy of life into her journey over the year and also gives many insights into how as readers we may learn to look at life’s experiences in a better way. We read how she has an acceptance of the events she cannot change and how she develops a peaceful solution. The book also includes interesting anecdotes relating to her family and by the time you have finished reading the book you feel that you know Jenny really well! I was very happy to lend the book to a young neighbour who was having difficulty trying to solve other people’s problems and she has found it to be extremely helpful in letting go. I thoroughly recommend that you buy this book!
