This is a story of a young girl and the summer she spends in the south with her momma's family in the late 70'S. Sadly, Emma lost her mom to a tragic accident and she is trying to find out who she is while also worrying about her two brothers and her dad. Through her descriptive writing, you feel like you are there with her in South Carolina experiencing the hot summer days while sipping lemonade on the pier watching the dolphins swim by. The summer will find Emma discovering some things she never knew but now must embrace. The author's sensitivity to Emma's loss is key to this book. Only through loss can you fully understand life. As the chapters unfold, little by little Emma comes to the realization that life goes on and she will find her own "raison d'etre". A wonderful book by a first time author that has you wanting more.

What a wonderful book! It grabs you from the very first page and you don't want to put it down. There were times when I felt such anticipation about what was coming next, I couldn't wait to "hear" the stories and life lessons from Emma's great grandmother. I felt many emotions reading about Emma and her brothers, who really touched my heart! I look forward to reading more from Jenny Pletcher Nolan, who I understand is already working on her next book.

I had a hard time putting Bearing Up Horseshoes down! The author, Jenny Nolan, kept me intrigued with the life of her main character, Emma. I loved how the Mrs. Nolan made you feel like you were actually in South Carolina with the characters! I can not wait until the next book is released. Great job!
