In 2005 the author and his father load a 1966 pickup and takeoff across the wild landscape of North America, wandering from coastal South Carolina to California. Under the broader skies further west, their modest slide-in camper transforms itself into a medium for deeper reflection. Humorous moments and arduous driving on remote roads frame more complex digressions, digressions that touch on some of the issues that gnaw silently at American society. The route also compelled the two to think more deeply about the unexpected violence of a Sunday morning 20 years earlier that shattered the father’s side of the family. The causes and consequences of this event pushed painfully to the fore at certain landmarks. The memories later sat with them by the fires in the darkened forests, asking difficult questions. The recounting of the trip is less of a travelogue. It is more about stepping outside self-constructed confines, touching the wild world around and within, and weaving it all... "Adult Parent-Child Relationships" One of the most difficult transitions in our maturation process is the discovery by us as children that our parents are people and the realization by our parents that we are now also adults. This engaging story of two adult men, father-son, on a cross-country, cross-family-history journey cannot help but make us reflect on our relationships with our parents. In addition to the soul-searing emotions that are evoked as the miles go by, the author provides us with loving descriptions of the various milieus the travelers transverse. Sadly for us readers, the destination is eventually reached and the book ends; let's hope there is more to read from this first-time author soon.

"Inspiring Pilgrimage" A thoughtful narrative with poignant, laugh-out-loud moments. You are invited to travel the distances alongside the author and his father cross-country and into the past. This meandering tale touches the bedrock of familial relationships and familiar courses and challenges you to think, to dig, just a little deeper. He openly shares thoughts and experiences with which you can identify and relate, gently guiding you to ponder your own. The author pours himself into the pages with deliberate consideration – you can feel the heartbeat, the anxiety, the contentment and even the feel of bouncing along in that Ford. He explores life-living lessons from down dirt roads, the wave of a stranger, summers back home, silence and conversation. His is an unimposing sojourn that calms the questions and yet stirs the contemplative.
