Jan 3, 2010Jerry W. Beare’s Parenting: A View from the Therapist’s Chair, is more than a book about rearing children. Often humorous and always honest, Jerry offers hands on examples about how couples and individuals might deal successfully with a variety of circumstances in their relationships. The first chapter, Separate Realities, sets the tone. Jerry’s unique voice sends a clear message. Through stories, some from his own life, he demonstrates that what may seem like irrational thinking to us is completely logical to someone else. Walk with a six-year-old Jerry into his first grade classroom where he encounters “the witch.” Was the woman who stood before a classroom full of small children a real witch? Of course, she was. No six-year-old demonstrates hysterical fear unless he truly believes what he is saying. Jerry explains that acknowledging another’s reality brings us closer to communicating on common ground. One will smile when reading Jerry’s witch story. Smile, and at the same time... More > associate their own childhood memories with his experience. In so doing, we realize that all of us, no matter our age, our condition, or our sex, all of us dwell within our own reality. The messages in Jerry’s book are not always easy. His chapter on drugs develops through interesting case studies that demonstrate the consequences of abuse. In addition, he addresses the use of social drugs. Because children learn by example, Jerry challenges parents to be the best role models possible. Further reading in that same chapter reveals rather shocking information regarding destructive substances about which some parents might have no knowledge. In the Communication chapter, the emphasis turns to a demonstration of how we can diffuse potentially volatile situations by the way we speak to each other. With effort, we can avoid statements that might come across as accusations because of the use of a simple pronoun. Jerry names discipline, structure, consistency, contribution and sacrifice as the “Five Principles” upon which young people need to focus in order to become responsible adults. Furthermore, he believes that when parents establish boundaries with a few simple rules, they create an atmosphere of love and safety where children thrive. A frank discussion about divorce and the impact it has on children; an outline that creates a free and open atmosphere for sharing during family meetings; a discipline plan that is all about choice; a compilation of “Life’s Little Laws” that reveals a keen philosophy for living, every aspect of the book provides a rich reading experience. Finally, Beare’s Basics punctuates each chapter with a summary of key points that serve as a reminder of the material covered. Parenting: A View from the Therapist’s Chair is a true blueprint for living. To learn more about Jerry W. Beare, Sr. and order his book, go to www.jerrybeare.com< Less
